Matthew Barney was born in San Francisco in 1967, and lives and works in New York.

He received a BA from Yale University in 1989.

In 1991 he was featured in a one-person exhibition of new work at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at the Tate Gallery, London; the Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Paris; and the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam. The latter exhibition travelled to the cpac MusE d'Art Contemporain, Bordeaux, and is currently on view in the Kunsthalle Bern. Barney was awarded the Europa 2000 prize for his contribution to the Aperto of the 1993 Venice Biennale.
